Sinus Augmentation

Sinus augmentation is one of the procedures that are required for the successful placement of dental implants. Also called a sinus lift, it is a surgical method that raises the sinus floor, increasing the height of the upper jaw so that it can have the volume that is needed to support and keep the dental implants firmly in place. 

Sinus augmentation is needed before dental implants can inserted into the jaw. This requirement is determined by the implant surgeon, after determining that the structure or volume of the upper jaw is not sufficient to support the placement of dental implants. The material that is used to augment the sinus floor may be sourced from the patient’s own body, from another human source, or from the bone of a cow.

Reasons for Insufficient Upper Jaw Volume

  • Severe gum disease – periodontal disease affects not only the gums but also the underlying bone tissue. As the disease progresses and is left unresolved, it eventually delivers a negative impact to the jawbone, which can become considerably thinner over time. Jawbone that has deteriorated will not be strong or tall enough to support dental implants, so a sinus augmentation procedure will be required. 
  • Long-term tooth loss – long years of suffering from tooth loss will affect the jawbone as well. Without tooth roots to stimulate the bone, the structure will deteriorate in time. This results in jawbone atrophy, with the bone structure deteriorating as years pass without the stimulation coming from tooth roots (natural or artificial). A sinus lift will deliver the jawbone enhancement that is needed, allowing dental implants to be placed successfully into the upper jaw.

Sinus Augmentation Procedure

  • After administering the anaesthetic to numb the area, the dentist or dental surgeon will cut the gum tissue to access the bone underneath. 
  • A small circular cut is made into the bone, and the bony piece is gently lifted into the sinus cavity.
  • The space that is created by lifting the bone is filled with the bone grafting material. This is done to increase the volume or height of the upper jawbone.
  • The incision is closed, and the healing process begins.

 

The grafting material will be given enough time to integrate with the surrounding bone tissue. After the healing period and when the structure of the upper jaw has been improved enough, it can now support dental implants and keep them secured in place.
